The Fibroscan machine uses a transmitting and receiving probe that produces the mechanical wave and a transducer that produces the ultrasound wave. and a computer that processes the information and generates an image of the elastic wave and the value of the hepatic rigidity. The basic principle is that whether the liver tissue is hard or soft will give information about the presence and severity of liver disease. Diseased livers are stiffer than the healthy ones. The volume of hepatic parenchyma evaluated is much higher than that examined in the liver biopsy and so the chances of missing disease is also less.
