Perianal Rash in Babies – Causes, Home Care & When to See a Pediatric

Perianal rash in babies means redness, soreness, or irritation around the ANUS. It is quite common in infants and usually happens due to excess moisture, friction from diapers, or sensitive skin.

Common causes include:

  • Diaper rash due to wet or soiled diapers
  • Yeast (fungal) infection
  • Irritation from wipes, soaps, or detergents
  • Acidic stools caused by gut inflammation
  • Lactose intolerance or cow’s milk protein allergy

Home care tips:

  • Clean the area gently with plain water
  • Change diapers frequently
  • Apply barrier creams like zinc oxide or petroleum jelly
  • Give diaper-free air time whenever possible

Most mild rashes improve with simple care. If the rash is persistent, painful, or keeps coming back, it may be a sign of an underlying gut issue. In such cases, consult a Pediatric Gastroenterologist for proper evaluation and treatment.
